Benjamin Banneker is a representative figure of the world that shows that competent people can succeed in spite of the poor environment and educational opportunities. Banneker’s work has contributed widely to proving arguments that African-Americans are not intellectually lower than whites. He was also an assistant in the field of astronomy while designing the boundary for the newly born Washington D.C.
Benjamin Banneker was born on November 9,1731 in Maryland. During this time, Africans struggled from severe slavory. Benjamin’s parents were freed slaves who gained freedom from the slavery. When Benjamin was a boy, his grandmother taught Benjamin how to read with the Bible. When Benjamin was 15, Benjamin invented an irrigation system of ditches to help his family farm. Benjamin was interested not just in inventing but he was also interested in watch-making and astronomy. As Benjamin grew up, his interest in mathmatics also grew. Benjamin wrote and collected written mathmetical puzzles and riddles as well as solving them.
Benjamin Banneker is well known for his work on inscribed figures. One of his best known inscribed figure is “Banneker’s Inscribed Equilateral Triangle”. Benjamin figured out the calculation to find the lengths of the sides of an inscribed equilateral triangle in a circle.
Benjamin Banneker died in 1806 just a month before his 75th birthday. He had been weak for some time and gave much of his wealth to his sisters and their children. Oddly, the moment Banneker was being buried in the cemetery on the family farm, his house burned down. After that, everything he owned, such as his manuscript, his amazing invention, the alarm clock, was destroyed. However, examples of his legacy and his dedication and passions are still alive today.
What I realized from his life, dedication and achievements was that he could stand firm even though he had grown up in a difficult environment and racial discrimination. Even though I do not know Benjamin’s achievments, I could see the eagerness from Benjamin’s works.
